The Roy Ince Collection of British Coins
Roy Ince
Roy was born in 1942 in Derby and started collecting coins before he was 10 years old. At first it was just the brass threepenny coins and he couldn’t understand why some dates were difficult to find.
Friends gave him some older silver threepenny coins which expanded his interest. His older brother had left home and worked abroad as a surveyor. When he occasionally came home, he would give Roy some foreign coins too.
The main break was when Roy was offered what he thought was a George III Penny dated 1799 in return for some of his foreign coins. It was of course really a halfpenny, but this started an interest in older English coins which he continued to collect for the rest of his life. He was a keen member of the Derbyshire Numismatic Society and for 25 years was the auction secretary and auctioneer.
