Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith (4069 Pte. J. Bolton, Scot: Rifles) minor edge bruising, good very fine £80-£120

John Bolton was born in York in 1871 and attested for the Scottish Rifles in Leeds on 9 June 1891, having previously served in the 4th (Militia) Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment. Posted to the 2nd Battalion, he served in India from 2 March 1892 to 12 February 1895, and was promoted Corporal on 23 September 1895. He transferred to the Army Reserve on 10 July 1896, but was recalled to the Colours on 9 October 1899, and served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 23 October 1899 to 7 July 1900. Reverting again to the Army Reserve on 26 April 1902, he was discharged on 8 June 1903, after 12 years’ service.
