John Healey was born in Limerick, Ireland and enlisted in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers at Wrexham in June 1885, aged 18 years, direct from the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Liverpool Regiment. Embarking for India as a Private in the 1st Battalion in September 1887, he served in the Hazara operations of 1891 prior to his return to the U.K. in March 1893. Having then been placed on the Army Reserve, he was recalled on the outbreak of hostilities in South Africa, where he served from February 1900 to June 1902. Healey was discharged on his return to the U.K.
