A Second World War Burma operations M.C. group of six awarded to Major O. H. Waring, Kenya Regiment, late Devonshire Regiment, onetime attached King’s African Rifles

M.C. London Gazette 24 May 1945. The original recommendation states:

‘On 25 February 1945, in the area of Chatauk-Ywathit, Lieutenant O. H. Waring was commanding a fighting patrol of two platoons. With great initiative he worked the patrol up to an enemy held feature without being spotted until they could hear enemy mortar fire orders. Owing to the broken nature of the ground his advance could not be covered from the rear and observation was impracticable. He therefore decided to assault the enemy position without artillery support. Moving swiftly over sharp ridges he led his patrol right through the enemy position cutting it in half and silencing two M.Gs and a mortar. He then re-organised his force and asked his Battalion Commander which part of the enemy position to attack next. He had already successfully organised the evacuation of a British Platoon Commander and other wounded. To cover the evacuation of the wounded he carried out a second assault, thereby causing the enemy to counter-attack in the wrong direction. Lieutenant Waring displayed magnificent coolness and courage throughout the whole operation and brought the whole patrol back with all its wounded inspite of heavy M.G. and mortar fire.’

Oliver Henry Waring was attached to the 71st (1st Somaliland) Battalion, King’s African Rifles, at the time of the above cited deeds.
