Hervey Greathead was first commissioned into the 8th Hussars in February 1887 and retired, as a Captain, in November 1898 when he received a commission in the 4th (Militia) battalion, Durham Light Infantry. However, he served throughout the Boer War attached to his old regiment, the 8th Hussars and, in July 1902, became a Captain in the Hertfordshire Imperial Yeomanry.
